Choosing General Contractors versus Subcontractors

Hello, my name is Isabel, and I bought a fixer-upper house a few years ago. Through the years of having multiple projects done to my home I have had a lot of contractors in and out of the house, and I have learned how to effectively hire them and successfully work with them. I have worked with general contractors as well as specialists for things like roofing. If you aren't sure when to choose a general contractor over a subcontractor, take a look at the tips in my blog. 4 Master Bedroom Customisations Every Homeowner Should Consider

Rosalyn Hunt

Moving forward on a master bedroom remodel gives you the chance to expand the room, change the entire look of the room, and give yourself some luxury. There are several options to include in your master bedroom plans. Before you get lost in a sea of ideas, consider these four customisations every homeowner should consider.

Built in Wardrobes

A built in wardrobe in the master bedroom has its benefits. The main reason that you should consider this customisation is for the valuable space saving options it can provide. They allow you to store items according to your own preferences. For example, you can have them built to hold not only your clothes, but also your bedding and storage baskets for miscellaneous linens. You can even have built in shoe racks added.

Sliding and Pocket Doors

One design flaw in many master bedrooms are the doors. If they swing inward toward the room, you end up having to control the space around the door. This means having areas of unused space that could be used if the door wasn't there. Since removing all the doors in the home is likely not an option, consider sliding and pocket doors instead. These types of doors do not swing out or in to the bedroom. This leaves you with usable space and a clean streamlined look.

Lounging Area

You may want to consider an expansion of the master bedroom. If this is an option, consider adding a lounging area. The area doesn't have to be large to be effective. You can add two chairs and an end table or you can choose a lounger with a small side table. This is an ideal option if you enjoy reading, or just need a place to lounge at the end of a long day. It is also ideal if you have friends over often to help you go through your wardrobe or decide on the right outfit for the evening. They can sit comfortably while you model your wardrobe options.

Flush Lighting

If you don't want to use traditional lighting sources, and you want to avoid hanging lights or ceiling fan and light combinations you may want to consider flush lighting. You can have an electrical contractor install the lighting into the walls and ceilings to give the amount of light to the area that you need. You can also go with LED energy efficient options and dimmer switches to adjust the lighting according to your mood.

These are just four of the ideas you should consider. For more ideas, especially with your walk in or built in wardrobes, consider visiting a home decorator or interior designer. They can fill you in on the options and help you find the right contractor for the job.
