Choosing General Contractors versus Subcontractors

Hello, my name is Isabel, and I bought a fixer-upper house a few years ago. Through the years of having multiple projects done to my home I have had a lot of contractors in and out of the house, and I have learned how to effectively hire them and successfully work with them. I have worked with general contractors as well as specialists for things like roofing. If you aren't sure when to choose a general contractor over a subcontractor, take a look at the tips in my blog. They will inform, guide and help you. I am glad you found my blog. Enjoy reading!

3 Reasons to Lay Double Brick Walls in a New Home Build

Rosalyn Hunt

If you're planning to build your own home, then you need to decide on a material for your external walls. If you favour brick, then double brick construction is worth considering. Here, your bricklayer creates a wall with two layers of bricks with a cavity gap between them. You effectively get an outside and inside wall connected by ties.

What are the advantages of this build?

1. Get Extra Wall Strength

The walls of your new home need to be strong and stable. If you're building in an area that is prone to high winds and storms, then it's worth making sure that your structure is fit for purpose in bad weather. Single-layer walls can't always cope with severe damage. However, a double brick wall is more reinforced. The two walls and the ties that connect them in their cavity make the building stronger and more stable.

2. Moisture-Proof Your Home

Your exterior walls don't just need to be strong and solid. They should also act as a protective barrier for the inside of your home. Some materials struggle to do this job. For example, if your walls have a brick veneer over a timber frame, then any moisture that sits in the brickwork might pass through to the timber behind it. If your structural timber gets damp or wet, then it might rot. You could have a major job on your hands to fix the problem.

If you build a double brick wall, then you have a gap between the two walls. If the outside wall gets damp or wet, then any moisture that passes through it will land in the gap. This gap helps the moisture disperse. It isn't as likely to pass through to the other wall and then into your home.

3. Reduce Noise Transmission

Your home should be a haven from the outside world. It's the place where you and your family can relax. Before you build your home, you should think about the noise inside and outside the building. Ideally, you want to shut out external noise. You also don't want internal noise to transmit outside the building and disturb your neighbours.

Your external walls play a part here. If they are too thin or made from materials that are acoustically weak, then they will transfer noise too easily. If you use a double-bricked construction, then you effectively get two walls between you and the outside world. Less noise comes in and goes out.
